Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control Biobank
The Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SIIDC) has performed a
series of population-based, nationwide investigations on the immunity against
infections in the Swedish population. In 1968, 3000 subjects were samples, in
1977/78 1845 subjects, in 199-91 4800 subjects and in 1997 2400 subjects were
sampled. The samples have been analysed for the age-specific population immunity
of e.g. polio, parotitis, measles, rubell, diphtheria and tetanus.
SIIDC has also during decades served as a reference laboratory for many
microbiological analyses. As a part of the quality control and documentation
system, part of the samples that have been analysed have been stored at minus 20
C. Samples have been stored since 1957 and complete series of samples are stored
since 1977.

The biobank is currently being reorganized. Professor Joakim Dillner is currently the responsible project leader of the reorganisation. The administrative responsibility of the biobank rests with the head of the SIIDC, Ragnar Norrby.
An application should be sent to the Steering Group. Please contact the quality assurance manager Lena Lindberg for instructions and forms.

The clinical database contains the clinical information provided on the referral
sheet as well as the results of the requested virus analyses. Registry linkages
based on the personal identification number have not been made as yet.
Contribution to the National Biobanking program: The SIIDC biobank received
already in 2000 a 250.000 SEK start up-grant for exploration of the biobank from
the WCN biobanking programme. Following definitions of the necessary tasks,
funds for reorganization of the biobank of (3.2 million SEK) were requested and
approved by the Swedish government, Dept. of Health and Welfare. The SIIDC
biobank participates in the national networking towards improved quality
assurance, "Good Biobanking Practise".
