General Information:

Prospective observational population-based study with a baseline examination 1991-1996 (n = 28098) And follow ups of mortality and morbidity by means of registries. Main focus on cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Biobank content:

Each blood donor to the bank contributes a 40-ml sample, and 30 ml of the blood sample is committed to blood fractionation while the other 10 ml is used to prepare a serum sample from this amount of blood the following samples for each subject are stored in the bank:

Role in The National Biobanking Programme:

  1. Coordinates the work package on optimisation and quality control of DNA extraction (WP 4.1) methods from whole blood, serum, paraffin blocks etc.
     
  2. Performs an improvement on the biobank infrastructure by a) systematic DNA extraction and arraying of all samples b)implements a formal quality control system c) provides data on usefulness of samples such as endpoints and quality documentation to the National Biobanking programme joint database.
     
  3. Delivers samples for epidemiological research. A complete listing of samples delivered during 2002 will be posted here soon.
