Fresh Tissue Biobank at Clinical Pathology Uppsala

Name of biobank:

Fresh Tissue Biobank at Clinical Pathology Uppsala

General Information:

Specimens of fresh-frozen tissues (focus on solid tumors) and cells (focus on leukemia and lymphoma) collected at the Department of Pathology since the 1970s;

  1. in various on-going and terminated research projects,

  2. in parallel to routine diagnostic work to secure a future possibility to review the case using techniques that require fresh non-fixated tissue,

  3. in the current fresh tissue biobanking project in the National Biobanking Programme (WP 5.1) - see below.

Responsible organisation:

Uppsala University Hospital, Department of Clinical Pathology.

Responsible principle scientist:

Johan Botling

Rules for acess:

Contact Johan Botling. Formal decision by the head of the Clinical Pathology Department. Guidelines for requests to use biobank material will be added shortly.

Biobank content:

Fresh-frozen tissue specimens (n=26 000) stored at -80 C, mainly solid tumors. Fresh-frozen cell pellets (n=5 000) stored at -80 C, mainly leukemia and lymphoma. Fresh viable cell suspensions (DMSO/serum) (n=20 000) in liquid nitrogen, mainly leukemia and lymphoma.

Attached database:

Yes, under development as the inventory proceeds. Currently approximately 14 000 entries.

Variables in database:

Up to five selected publications:

These recent publications were based on studies offresh tissues/cells from this biobank.

Role in The National Biobanking Programme:

  1. The aim of WP 5.1 is to optimize biobanking of fresh tissues and cells. To this end a prospective pilot biobank has been established.

    1. Protocols har been developed and implemented regarding tissue handling at operation, during transport, and at pathology.

    2. Good characterisation of the frozen specimens is ensured by frozen section and amendmet of digital histological images to the database

    3. The endpoints of the project is DNA- and RNA- quality along with preserved tissue morphology.

The main deliverables to the National Biobanking Project are a SOP for handling of fresh tissues and QA protocols for testing of RNA-integrity.

  2. Inventory of the present fresh tissue biobank at Clinical Pathology Uppsala - standardized storage and registration in the database. Qnality control of selected samples by protocols developed above.
