The Cardiovascular Risk of 60-Year-Old People

Name of biobank:

The cardiovascular risk of 60-year-old people - an epidemiological cohort study on men and women, born 1937 and 1938 in Stockholm County.

General Information:

To evaluate the predictive power of both new and old cardiovascular risk factors for the occurence of different cardiovascular diseases in men and women after the age of 60, a cohort of 4,260 60-year-old men and women, born 1937 and 1938 within Stockholm County, was established 1997-1998. At baseline, the 60-year-old people were subjected to a thorough health check-up, including characterization of various environmental exposure and biochemical/genetic risk factors. A large biobank was established, containing serum. The cohort will be followed for the currency of cardiovascular end-points, including diabetes mellitus. Annual matchings with several national cardiovascular registers will take place.

Biobank content:

Each blood donor has contributed to biochemical analyses at baseline (see Biochemical Variables at Baselines). Serum, EDTA-plasma, citrate plasma, and whole blood have been stored at -80 C in freezers both at Karolinska Hospital and Karolinska Institutet.
Plasma 12x0.5 ml, citrate plasma 10x0.5 ml, serum 16x0.5 ml.
Whole blood 3-4x4.5 ml.
DNA has been extracted on parts of the material (1077 male subjects. It is intended to extract DNA from all subjects.)
